A Journey for Her Daughter—From Gujarat to Europe
Rajini's journey from hardship to entrepreneurship showcases resilience, determination, and an unflinching commitment to her daughter. From learning to drive to owning her business, her story inspires with every twist and turn.
To know Rajini, even for the duration of an interview, is to know someone who loves fiercely. Abandoned by her then-husband when she was a month pregnant with her daughter, for eleven years, Rajini has worked hard to make ends meet.
Despite the circumstances, she, now a 32-year-old mother, has navigated life’s twists and turns with remarkable courage. At a precarious point in her life, she had to start from scratch, find jobs that allowed her to make ends meet, and grow in her career to secure a safe future for her daughter.
For all that she encountered, her journey from the narrow lanes of Gujarat to the wide highways of Europe is nothing short of extraordinary.
The beginning of her career
“I used to feel that a driver has no or very low value, but now I am proud of myself for being one,” Rajini says, her voice tinged with confidence.
But what brought her to this moment of realization?
“I was not very educated. When my husband abandoned me and my unborn daughter, I was stumped. I had no one to turn to or get help from, so I took matters into my own hands and took up odd jobs to make ends meet,” she recounts.
“When I chanced upon Vikas NGO and their driver Behn program, I joined it to learn how to drive, after which I obtained my 4-wheeler license. First I started working in a company as a driver. I worked for delivery platforms often carrying 20-25 kg heavy groceries on my back throughout the two-wheeler drive. Then I got my own car and operated on Ola and Uber.”
Her fascinating ascent from a driving student to owning her vehicle on renowned ride-hailing platforms makes her journey to Europe an inspiration to everyone who has seen years of struggle before reaping the rewards. Her career trajectory reflects the highs and lows of her life.
“From cleaning and sweeping in houses to surprising passengers when they encounter a lady driver, I have seen lows, highs, and thanks to this opportunity now, incredible pride,” she reflects.
But it wasn’t just about earning a livelihood; it was about reclaiming her confidence all those years of menial work had robbed her of and proving her worth in a society that often undermines the capabilities of women. “I wanted to become a great driver to prove a point,” she asserts, recalling the epiphany that propelled her forward. She saw her worldview change as the scenery around her shifted every day. Her mind expanded with every new place she visited, every new face she met, and every new experience she encountered. Her lifestyle, clothes, speaking style, and habits all underwent a dramatic shift.

She saw herself develop new confidence and become more aware of the people around her, ready to take on all the curveballs life would throw at her with confidence and grace.
Despite facing skepticism and criticism from her family and society, Rajini remained undeterred. “My parents were also asked to make sure their daughter stayed home,” she recounts, the pain of societal judgment and her father’s innumerable threats still palpable. But with each mile she drove, she silenced her detractors and found her voice.
The road to Europe
As she prepares to embark on a new chapter in Europe, Rajini’s resolve remains unshaken. “I am confident in my ability to adapt myself to survive wherever I am,” she affirms, her determination unwavering.
For Rajini, Europe represents more than just a geographical shift; it symbolizes a realm of endless possibilities and newfound opportunities. “I wish to move to Europe for three reasons,” she shares passionately, her eyes gleaming with anticipation. “To be the first lady driver to move out of this area, to earn more money for my daughter’s future, and to pursue my passion for racing cars.”
But amidst the excitement of the unknown, a bittersweet farewell to her homeland lingers. “I will miss my parents and my daughter. I would also miss my current job,” she admits.
As Rajini prepares to embrace the challenges that lie ahead, her story serves as a beacon of hope for countless others who dare to dream against all odds. “I just want to ensure I stay focused and reach newer heights there,” she declares, her spirit undaunted by the journey ahead.
In Rajini’s story, we find echoes of our own aspirations and the courage to pursue them relentlessly. For her, the road ahead may be long and arduous, but with every twist and turn, she drives closer to her dreams, one mile at a time.
